This work addresses fragile temporal boundaries during logical state preparation and measurement in the XY surface code. A preparation protocol based on locally entangling qubits before stabilizer measurements reduces damaging fault configurations and improves the threshold and logical error rate over the standard protocol in the evaluated fault-tolerant regimes.
