Biography

Yue Wu is a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Azure Quantum, working on quantum error correction (QEC) and the systems that make fault-tolerant quantum computation practical. His research spans decoding algorithms, hardware acceleration, programming languages, and runtime systems, with an emphasis on open-source implementations.

During his first year at Microsoft, he developed deq, the world's first general, universal, and dynamic QEC decoding system. Building on the earlier LEGO architecture proposal, deq supports general QEC codes and custom logical instruction sets, including dynamic logical circuits with feed-forward and arbitrary branching. He presented deq in an invited talk at QEC 2026 in Santa Barbara.

His recent work also includes Micro Blossom, the first hardware-accelerated exact minimum-weight perfect matching (MWPM) decoder to achieve sub-microsecond latency on average, demonstrated on surface codes up to distance 13, and Hyper Blossom, which generalizes blossom-algorithm decoding to hypergraphs through the minimum-weight parity factor (MWPF) formalization, with conditional optimality proofs and an open-source implementation. His earlier Fusion Blossom work received the Best Paper Award at IEEE QCE 2023.

Yue completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Yale University in 2025, co-advised by Lin Zhong and Shruti Puri. He received his bachelor's degree from Peking University in 2020, where he worked with Chenren Xu on wireless and embedded systems.

Research & Projects

Low-latency hardware, hypergraph algorithms, and dynamic fault-tolerant computation.

deq

The world's first general, universal, and dynamic QEC decoding system. Developed at Microsoft Azure Quantum, deq realizes the architecture proposed in LEGO as a working system, supporting general QEC codes, custom logical instruction sets, feed-forward, and arbitrary branching. Presented in an invited talk at QEC 2026 in Santa Barbara.

Hyper Blossom

Generalizing blossom-style QEC decoding to hypergraphs. Hyper Blossom formulates decoding as the minimum-weight parity factor (MWPF) problem, with mathematical proofs of optimality under stated conditions and certifiable proximity bounds. The Hyperion implementation is open source in Rust with Python bindings.

Micro Blossom

The first hardware-accelerated exact MWPM decoder with sub-microsecond average decoding latency, not just throughput. The FPGA prototype achieves 0.8 microseconds at surface-code distance 13 and a physical error rate of 0.1%. Published at ASPLOS 2025.

Fusion Blossom

An exact, parallel MWPM decoder with almost-linear average time complexity. Best Paper Award, IEEE QCE 2023.

Distributed Union-Find Decoder

A distributed Union-Find decoder on FPGA with sub-microsecond decoding time and an architecture designed to scale to larger surface-code distances. Published at IEEE QCE 2023.

QEC-Playground

An educational and research tool for quantum error correction. Everything is visualized, e.g. the QEC code circuit, noise model, random errors, decoding result, etc.

Visible Light Backscatter Communication

In IoT scenarios, ultra-low-power (micro-watts level) devices need bi-directional data link with crucial power consumption limitation. Visible light backscatter communication could solve this problem.

Smart RF Table

A table which enables wide-range wireless charging and communication through magnetic coupling. It’s able to power up small gadgets like desk lamp and detect objects with NFC tags on it.
